BALTIMORE, USA – Game of Thrones.
Ever seen it?
It seems everyone in the office is watching the latest season. At least that’s what they’re talking about when I go to the kitchen to get some coffee.
But not me.
My show is Vikings.
And I don’t recommend it.
It’s disgusting.
There’s blood everywhere.
All the characters are jerks.
And no one has a sense of humor.
But I’m hooked. (translation: addicted)
Here’s a fun scene.
That’s Rollo, and he’s just “moved” to Paris (More accurately, he and his Viking buddies tried to conquer it but couldn’t.) (And who says the French can’t fight?)
Anyway, he decides he should learn some French so he can talk to his new wife. So what does he do? Of course, he takes some lessons.
And of course, the lessons are boring and stressful and don’t work.
1,200 years later, not much has changed.
And now here’s the fun part.
Here he is giving some feedback to his teacher right before he throws him into the fireplace.
Yeah!
I felt the same way when I was a kid sitting in French class.
And Latin class. And algebra class. And so on and so on…
But alas, we are civilized people and cannot terrorize our boring teachers.
But you can quit.
That’s a simple idea, right?
However, it’s surprising how many people keep doing what doesn’t work. And I’m not just talking about English lessons.
In January, I got to fly to Miami to hear a famous business guy speak.
His big lesson was, fire fast.
Then he asked the audience, Have you ever fired an employee and then thought you should have waited a little longer?
No, it’s always the right time.
And it’s usually something you waited too long to do.
So whatever you’re doing that’s not working, quit now.
Don’t be afraid.
Trust that you’ll discover something better.
Something (or someone) better can only enter your life if you’ve created space.
But please, keep your axe out of people’s heads.
