I’m not a quitter, but…
I just quit a book last night.
You see, I like to read fiction in bed.
It helps me wind down.
I forget my troubles.
My mind stops racing.
And soon I’m drowsy.
But last night, I had to admit, I made a mistake and bought a boring book.
I chose it because it’s by a famous English writer.
I really liked two other books he wrote.
But this one was a disappointment.
No conflict. No drama. Not even one zombie!
Just a young couple walking, talking, kissing, gazing into the fire, walking some more, talking some more, kissing some more, gazing into each other’s eyes….
As we say in English, It was a real snooze-fest.
I stopped less than half way through.
So why am I telling you this?
And how can this help your English?
Should vs Want
When I go to bed, I want something I can look forward to reading.
I recommend you do the same with your daily English routine.
Are you looking forward to the book you’re reading? The podcast you’re listening to? The Netflix series you’re watching?
If not, find something else.
Unsuccessful people say “should.”
“I should exercise more.”
“I should eat better.”
“I should sign up for another boring English course.“
Successful people say “want.”
“I want to go biking with my kids.”
“I want to eat an avocado salad for lunch.”
“I want to go to bed early so I can read the next chapter of Atomic Habits.”
Magical things happen when what you should do is also what you want to do.
Cheers,
Mr. Vig
P.S.
What’s that?
You don’t have a daily English routine?
A good place to start is with daily listening.
I can recommend Atomic Homework.
thanks a lot.
