Tonight’s poker night at my place.
Some friends will come over and my kitchen table will become a poker table.
Even if I lose, which I usually do, I still enjoy it.
And…
It’s a good opportunity to teach you some…
Poker English
The game is so popular in the US, that everyone — even people who have never played — uses many expressions that come from poker.
For example, “play your cards right.”
Ever heard that?
It means to do the right things to get what you want.
Example Sentence: “If you play your cards right, you might get the promotion at work.”
Your Turn
Do you know any poker expressions?
Share in the comments below and maybe we’ll talk about your poker expression tomorrow.
I’m not really a good poker player, but I do know a lot of poker expressions, for example: “poker-faced”, that is, you can’t read anything on his face, he has no facial expressions. Or: “it’s a poker party”, meaning very risky.
Hi Ryan, I dont know that Poker is favourite in Amerika. But, of course over there is Las Vegas…! City of game. I like play game of cards. In Slovakia we speak – Put all cards on the table. It means you tell true about all.
The poker expression that came to my mind first is “poker face”.
If you are a poker face, it means that your facial expression does not reveal your state of mind. I think it can also be a person’s ability not to express it.
Another poker expression is “High Roller”: I guess you’re quite a High Roller. It means that you are a person who doesn’t get scared by the slightest thing. Or it could mean that you are too bold.
I don’t play poker neither know any poker expressions unfortunately. So it is very good you are teaching us some of them.
Thanks.
