I used to know an Irish guy who taught English in Prague.
He was a serious teacher and taught all over the world, from the Middle East to Asia to Europe.
One time, while he was back visitin Prague, he told me about the long, twelve-hour flight from Korea where he was working at The British Council.
“What did you read on the plane?” I asked him.
“A grammar book,” he told me.
That’s not normal!
Mr. Vig’s Vocab
Last week I sent you a survey.
I asked, “How can I help you?”
And most of you said, “Vocabulary!”
You need more words.
And you need to remember those words.
So this week, I’ve been working on a new vocabulary course.
On Friday, I will announce it.
So remember to check your email because it will be for at a special discount price only for one weekend.
And now…
This week, as part of my 20th anniversary jubilee, I’m sharing with you secrets about English and learning that most teachers never learn.
Here we go…
English Teachers Are Not Normal
Grammar is complicated.
Rulebooks put normal people to sleep.
But English teachers LOVE it!
That’s why they teach it.
They do not teach grammar because it helps you reach your goals of getting a better job, traveling the world, or understanding your grandkids in the UK.
Life is complicated.
Let’s keep English simple.
I like to lern English but I am retired .
Hi Ryan. I’am impatiently waiting for your discount for starting vocabulary lesson. I hope a very good price.
Thank you Ryan you announced us about your Vocab course, I think is important and I just wait to read it for improving my vocabulary.
Sorry for your friend to have a such small imagination to read grammar books on the airplane, a free space where you can read all sorts of books you like ,or think about new ideas and tips you want to change in your life.
Let’s keep English simple! I like that.
Thank you for your letters. I like to read those.
I think many don’t like grammar, think that it is boring, but we need to learn it too. At the beginning it seems that is just another boring part of foreign language, but when you start speaking English or you use it at work then you start to understand all those grammar rules.
I think grammar and spelling are important, esspecially for native language. We all learn both in the school for our native language. In order to speak and write properly.
People write and people read, and if it is not written properly it looks miserable. Just think of reading something written wrong in your native language!
BUT, learning foreign language is depending on the purpouse or one’s aim.
You do not need to learn grammar, eventually you will catch it anyway. When? It doesn’t matter if you are going to speak with your grandkids, or while travelling. But, for business meetings or writing mails, or even papers you need grammar and spelling. So, it is not bad to learn some grammar as well.
In Vig village, the mayority of members want to be fluent for travelling and fun, so we need better vocabular
👍
I love reading you. Learning through your stories is so fun
Life is complicated.?
Let’s keep life simple either, not only English studies😀
Yes, (English) teachers are not normal. Let´s imagine an artist, an economist, an chef or a car mechanic. When a student comes to a pottery class to make a Christmas present, the artist is not teaching him the art history. He shows him how to make a mug and the student just makes it. (Can be with a lot of interesting extra information.) What joy under the tree. So it is the same with taxes, with bouillabaisse or changing a wheel. In our case, with English. What do you think? Have a discovery day. Rebeka
I totaly agree with you Ryan
Grammar is boring and I can’t stick to it
Thanks for your creativity
I believe basic knowledge of grammatical rules is helpful what doesn’t mean without this we can not be fluent in language. Just think how kids are starting learning native language and progress in it not having clues about grammar. So, for us adults grammar or no grammar depends on what for we need foreign language.
