Jan was my good student.
I visited him in his office every Tuesday and Thursday.
He always did his homework.
He knew lots of grammar rules.
Vojta, on the other hand, was not my good student.
He canceled his lessons often, never did homework, and during our lessons, he just wanted to talk about sports and politics.
But guess which student became the better English speaker?
20 Years Later
I’ve been an English teacher for 20 years!
What have I learned?
A lot!
And this month, I’m going to share with you my best lessons.
Hopefully, they’ll make you smile; and hopefully they’ll improve your English.
Then on Friday, I’ll invite you to try a new course I’m busy making.
It’s my anniversary, but you’ll get the gift – a new course with a special celebration price.
Jan vs. Vojta
The winner: Vojta.
After work and at the weekends, Jan returned to the same friends and family who didn’t speak English.
But Vojta had an international social circle. With his friends, he usually had to speak English.
The lesson: Your friends are more important than your teacher
Hello! I agree with you, practical teaching (talking) is better. If you know the rules but don’t speak, it will be very difficult to start speaking when you meet English speakers in reality.
Very true. Gathering with English speakers help a lot and faster to become eloquent in English.
I was like Jan, now I neither remember the rules nor speak fluently🥴
Dear Anna
Let me disagree with you, because in this sentence you have just applied the rule of neither… nor correctly (I think). So, you remember some rules. Regarding talking, I do not know because I’ve never heard you speak English, but I am sure you can talk and understand this language if you follow Mr. Vig village. This is another good way to learn.
“a small step towards perfection”, metaphor 😉, thank you, Miguel, for your comment😃
Yes, this made me smile and also make me realize that I need to expand my own social circles. I still have some work to do with my shyness.
Why do I need English? To communicate with people who speak English. To do this, I need a teacher who can create a circle of students who can teach English with native speakers. And you did it for people who are trying to learn grammar, understand their native language, but without communicating with the locals it is impossible. So, thank you, Mr. Vig, for this opportunity to learn to speak English fluently
Um, I’m a bad student,, I’m octogenare but ,I don’t give up!
I contunue to learn English.. I like this language, I like the teacher !
It was a very interesting and instuctive story. I liked it!
Being a beginner, I totally agree with Vaida.
Happy teacher-bornday! In your twenties you have your life ahead of you. Benefit Is when your teacher become your friend. Thanks Ryan for better English – better life and possibility to meet interesting nice people in Vig Village. Great lemonade day for everybody 🙂
It is good example. Behavior of two diferent student and it usually is… In everything. One must try, use and have skills.
