“Can you teach me the past perfect continuous?”
A common request.
A normal English teacher would recite the rule and go home feeling satisfied.
Not me.
Maximalism
For two and a half years I was a travelling teacher.
I visited over 15 countries.
And I did it all with one bag.
If I wanted to buy something, and I couldn’t eat or drink it before my next plane took off, or fit it inside my bag, I left it at the store.
I was a minimalist.
Now I have an apartment.
Yesterday, I went shopping for something to hang on my empty walls.
Today, two delivery guys came to my door.
Wednesday, I’m going shopping for a new mattress.
Am I turning into a maximalist?
The Illusion of Grammar
How do you know you have a grammar problem?
Isn’t it because an English teacher told you?
What if grammar didn’t exist?
Then you couldn’t have a grammar problem.
And would you speak better?
I think you would.
Let’s talk about that this week…
Hi Ryan !
It’s my opinion
No foreign language can discount grammar.
Grammar and vocabulary are the essence of a foreign language.
Cheers ,
Gabriel
Nice comment, what you don’t have, you dont need. A simple way of living, less things -better living, Is this through?
Evriting Is a lot when you don’t health.
I will speak better when I remember a sufficient supply of words and know how to put them together “correctly” into an understandable sentence.
Cheers.
Grammar or not, if a person wants to learn something, he/she will learn it.
Hi,
In the past, you were a minimalist. Because you traveled a lot. But life changes.
In the past I was bought more, because I had better job and more money… I have nice furniture and I dont need still buy.
Everyone sometimes furnishes their apartment. Someone bought more in the past and someone buys more now.
Succes week.
Grettings to all, colleagues!
When we are born, we don´t grammar BUT, we do leanr to speak. Grammar is needed when you star school, to learn to write well. BUT, by then, we have already been speaking for more than 4 years and without grammar. It´s my opinion.
Cheers,
Eugenia.
How do I know I have a grammar problem?
My native language have one of the most difficult grammars amoung world languages.
Anf although we learn it a lot at school there are Lot of Slovaks who don’t know it.
Especially, when I see some comments on social media writting by the Slovaks there are a lot of evidence that they have grammar problems. Then I imagine how it is when my English grammar , is it also so poor with a lot of mistakes? This feeling does not make me confident at all.
Karl Marx is not autorytet for me at all, thx time we can have e.g. our chats … our education, job, order. Grammar gives us the possibility of order too, better understanding each other, not in one dimension.. etc
I think the roles of grammar can be an obstacle when we start learning a language.
I agree with you, Mr Vg let’s talk and the we’ll see the roles later.
Yığınla kelime eksiğim var… Temel gramer bilgilerini ve kuralları biliyorum… modullar ve cümleye ne anlam kattığını bildiğim halde.. kelime eksiğimden veya kelimeleri unuttuğumdan cümle kurarken çok düşünebiliyorum
Why do you write in Turkish language?!
Thank you Ryan for good advise, do not be a maximalist; instead is better to be a minimalist …
It was nice
It’s a common and interesting topic😊
It is quite an interesting interpretation of the grammar lessons! To concentrate or not on grammar in studying a foreign language is like a test for someone’s personality – it shows whether the fellow is open-minded or pedantic…
I consider minimalism and maximalism to be just two extreme concepts and well-being is somewhere between these two poles…
We need grammar, don’t we?
It can work for IELTS exam also?! Without learning grammar, can I pass the exam? I will be grateful ❤
Life has shown me that lack limits us and excess hinders us. In both conditions there is a risk to our health and it’s difficult to reach our potential / function optimally.
Our lifestyle is determined by many factors.
Are you turning into a maximalist?
No, I don’t think so. I think you are an adaptable person.
The new environment has its peculiarities to which it is good to adapt, if we can .
It is the same with grammar.
What if grammar didn’t exist?
There were distant times when it didn’t exist. Perhaps, communication in the future will make grammar redundant. But at this stage of development it is good to just adapt / optimize.
You cannot name yourself a maximalism for the fact you have an apartment and you going to buy a mattress. I feel that grammar had to be present in my connection with people, especially when I need to address by email. and bot only
