Once again…
It’s Mailbag Friday!
That’s when I answer your questions about English.
This week, a reader writes, “I don’t have time for English.”
Well, that’s not really a question.
But I hear it often.
So here’s a simple solution to this common complaint…
Run To The Lamppost
I just got back from visiting my physical therapist.
Two and a half years ago I broke my leg while skiing in the rain in Bansko, Bulgaria.
They put some metal inside me.
Once, I set off the metal detector while visiting the Romanian parliament building.
Then in April I finally had the metal removed.
Now I’m on the slow path to getting back to normal.
And today my physical therapist told me she wants me to start running.
“How far?” I asked.
“Just to lamp post,” she said.
“Ah, ha,” I thought. “She knows how to motivate her clients.”
You see, if she had told me, “I want you to run 5 kilometers twice a week” I probably would have done it once and quit.
But she gave me such an easy goal.
Of course I can run to the lamppost at the end of my street!
Now here’s the brilliant part…
When I get to the lamppost, I’ll think, “That was easy. And since I’m already outside, I might as well run some more.”
See how that works?
Now…
What about you?
You’re busy.
You have no time for English.
I know.
I believe you.
But can you run to the lamppost?
Back to Bansko for skiing this winter?
Pretty nice. Similar to do list. Start with easy item…
