“When I am here (in Milan) I do not fast on Saturday, when in Rome I do fast on Saturday.”
-St. Ambrose

“When in Rome.”
Do you know that expression?
You can also say, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”
When I travel, I try to eat as the locals eat
(Except last Sunday when a friend invited me to eat Texas barbeque…)
But maybe I’m unusual.
I remember I used to have a Thai neighbor in Prague.
He was married to a Czech woman.
They owned a Thai restaurant in the center.
And one day, when I was eating in his restaurant, I was surprised to see a group of Thai tourists walk in.
Am I the exception?
Do you eat like a local when you travel?
Or do you find food from home? (or KFC!)

I eat like a lokal!!
I always try to eat something from the local cuisine, but I choose what I like. I know I don’t like insects or gelatinous soup in China. But I like their duck. Since I can’t try everything, I choose what I would probably like. In the end, I need to eat and be full.
If I were staying somewhere for a longer period of time, I would probably visit a restaurant serving Croatian food to find out how it is prepared in a foreign country.
Usually local, I like to taste something new and prepare too. But not if it is very spicy dish. In Italy I ate pastas, tiramisu, ice creams, panakota and pizzas with artichoka, drank aperolspritz… 😉
During travelling , I prefer eating local food . It’s the occasion to discover something else , different tastes .. But sometime ,when I am in a foreign country, I choose french food for knowing how I appreciate far from France .
It’s worth trying many things in life, not just food in a foreign country. There are valuable cultural and artistic treasures abroad, the nature and weather, the people and buildings are different from what you are used to at home – one word like a hundred, “not everyone lives in America”. This is worth experiencing. That’s why the world is wonderful.
When in Rome do as.the Romans do!
I think it is the most beautiful experience to eat local food, to find out and see the local traditions when you travel in a foreign country. In these situation it make no sense to do the usual things you do home.
My preference when traveling out of my area or my country is to consume local/ ethnic food in order to try something new I never had before and to learn about different cousins. This is one of many ways to experience culture of places/countries I am traveling to.
Very often I go farther than just having food I used to ask about ingredients in dish. So clearly I do not keep trying to consume food what I have at home.
Hi, when I travel I east like a local food. I want to know their foods. I remember that in a Spain I tasted their sweetness Churoos. And in the Croatia I very liked their Ligne, there are fried sea food – small octopus.
I eat local food
When I travel, I try find food from home
Discovering local dishes is a big adventure. In the Czech rep. we had a program on TV called “You are what you eat”. (I think this program is known arround the world.) Yes, we can´t neglect it – we are what we eat :-). In the local restaurant we can chat with local people and find out interesting facts about local daily life. Local food (or stories on the backround) can show us why local people think and react in characteristic ways. There was (before the pandemic) a Czech pub in Barcelona near The Sagrada Familia. You can try “řízek s bramborovým salátem” and real “plzeň”. It was excellent. Made by Czech people. Our expectations were met. But in Barcelona the best local dishes are “paella” (ask José ;-)) and “churros con chocolate” (ask Tania ;-)). Yummi. Czech pub in Kathmandu is different. The food is prepared by local people. Tasty, but different than in CZ due to the ingredients and unknowledges of how it´s make in CZ. No problem. We will go back there anyway. Have a sunny day!
Hi everyone. . I love food and when l travel it’s the first thing that l do to eat local. But not only, l dress also like people especially in Arab countries.
Local is attractive, but sometimes it tastes too strange. U usually combine food, recommended local food and well-known international food.
I live in Bangkok, I’m originally from Ukraine. I’m looking for Ukrainian dishes here, or similar once. Because I very miss our national food. But I’m not a tourist in Thai already. I can’t eat local food. Maybe Thais can’t eat other food, and looking for where they can eat normally :)) European food is very salty for they and tasteless because isn’t spicy.
Maybe we can meet at BKK 🙂
Yes, I prefer local food, local drinks, local culture 🙂 – you don’t need to travel thousands of miles to eat McDonalds or KFC! They are almost the same all over the world.
