I’ve travelled the world.
I’ve seen some signs with English mistakes.
But this one may take the cake.
It’s the first sign that will require three Vitamin Vs to explain.
Thank you for your corrections.
And now…
Mistake #1
“Pizzerie.”
This is not an English word.
“Pizza” is a word.
“Pizzeria” (a place that makes and sells pizza) is a word.
But pizzerie….?
Nope.
A Good Question
A reader asks, “Can we say ‘burgeria’ for a burger restaurant?”
Hmm…
I like it.
But I’ve never heard it before.
So maybe there’s a business opportunity there…
TOMORROW: Mistake #2
“pizzerie” is the plural of “pizzeria” and “burgeria” is often used in Italy. Probably that restaurant is managed by an Italian owner
I like the idiom “to take the cake”. English explanation: to be the most remarkable or foolish of its kind. Ok :-). Have a great evening.
Comes from Italian, plural of pizzeria. In Italy many food words end in eria, example Spaghetteria, yogurteria, pescheria…
This is also how you can learn English!
Someone commented yesterday that PIZZERIE is the Czech word. I don’t know if a burger is a Czech word, too. Burger is nowadays common word in Serbia. It also may be in the Czech.
Useful comments and explanation, great way to learn. I like explanation given by Italian student how words in question supposed to be written in Italian.
I consider we cannot to correct all the mistakes, it is an illusion…a language is an alive system , we cannot control it
But yes we can see the.mistake and learn from it do not wrong once again…
Only AI could think to be perfect….!!
In Romanian we have this word pizzerie for the place where you can buy a pizza…
Pizzerie is the plural of pizzeria. -a is the ending of singular femminine nouns and -e is the ending of plural femminine nouns.
