“Français ou Anglais?” asked the stewardess.
The woman sitting next to me said “Un peu” (a little) in a very American accent.
But when she tried to order a Coke with ice, she forgot a word and quickly switched back to English.
I decided I could do better than her.
I told the stewardess, “Français.”
And suddenly, my personality changed!
EXTROVERTED OR NOT?
When you change languages, you also change personalities.
The language is a mask.
And according to the research I’ve read, speaking English makes you more extroverted.
That’s good, right?
But do you agree?
Tell me in the comments:
A) Yes, speaking English makes me more extroverted.
B) No, speaking English makes me more shy.
C) I don’t know – I never speak English.
Tomorrow, I’ll share the results.
And I’ll tell you how my personality changed while flying Air France.

Speaking English or any other foreign language generally does not change my personality. Even though I have experienced in a few situations that it could. These situations had one in common – I had forgotten that English is NOT my mother tongue. Means, I just talked and at the same time copied the (speaking) culture. Sorry, but it’s hard to describe, and at the same time interesting enough to think more about.
And now I think if it would help us to learn the language if we did ‘role plays’ in the chatrooms (here and there). This idea still is very abstract but maybe ground for something new.
A
I don’t think I change in another language.

B) Speaking english makes me more shy
Hi,
I rather think that language doesn´ t change my personality. But who knows, maybe…
Merry Christmas Ryan, have a great time at home!
Merry Christmas to all my fellow students!
Merry Christmas!
Speaking English makes me more shy. It works better when I speak to someone whose native language is obviously not English. I think it is because we’re meeting in a neutral location.
I am shy in my own language and in English too. I like to be funny and friendly in both language. It makes my live easier. I don’t notice the difference when I speak Finnish or English. Of course I speak more confidently and quickly in my own language.
