Last week I told you about my student, Pavla.
Many years after her first English lesson, she was still not fluent.
She thought it was her fault.
I disagreed.
If you missed that email, you can read it here.
In this lesson, you’ll discover the solution I gave her. It’s what I call “The English Secret.”
Let’s begin…
In 1959 this guy went for a walk.
His name was Arthur Sorensen. He was an anthropologist. He worked at the University of New York. And when he walked into the jungle he met the Vaupes Indians.
I guess they really liked his smile (or maybe it was the hat…) because they invited him to live with them.
And when he wasn’t helping them hunt for iguana, he studied them. And pretty soon, he made an interesting discovery:
On average, the Vaupes Indians of the Amazon rainforest speak four to six languages.
And they do it without teachers, without classes, even withoutMurphy’s Grammar in Use.
How?
The same way you learned your first language.
Naturally.
WE’RE BORN TO LEARN LANGUAGES
Ever heard of Noam Chomsky?
He’s a famous linguist at MIT.
One of his theories is that we all have a “language acquisition device” in our brains.
What this means is we’re born ready to learn a language.
Just like a bird is born to learn how to fly, our instinct is language.
And like all instincts, it doesn’t require Berlitz or Rosetta Stone.
Think about this: How did you learn your first language?
Was it in a classroom?
Or did you learn it naturally?
This is the big secret that the language schools don’t want you to know.
Their business needs you to need them.
They say, “You can’t learn a language naturally. You need us.”
Seven…eight…nine years later… here you are reading my blog…
HOW DO YOU LEARN NATURALLY?
Sure, you can just move to the UK, or just watch a lot of TV, or get some American friends…
But you might not get the results you want. Or as fast as you want.
It’s like telling someone who’s overweight, “You just need to eat less and exercise more.”
Yes, that’s exactly what they need.
But will they do it? And will they lose weight?
Probably not.
Because they also need specific information: what to eat, what not to eat, when to eat it, how much to eat, etc.
In other words, they need a guide.
And in my new Free Time Fluent course, I’m your guide for mastering English naturally, without classes, text books or grammar lessons.
