It was the strangest place.
And just a few days ago, I had never heard of it.
It’s called Kowloon Walled City.
It was the world’s largest slum.
And it was also the most crowded city in the world.
30,000 – 50,000 people (no one knows exactly) lived in an area the size of three and a half football pitches.
Here’s a model of how it looked:
Squatters lived there.
That means they were there illegally — the buildings were illegal, no one paid taxes, the police were afraid to enter, crime and drugs and prostitution existed next to schools and families and churches
And because there were no taxes and no rules, it attracted many factories.
You could also find businesses to sell you illegal products like dog meat and heroin.
Oh, and if you needed a dentist, the Walled City dentists could offer you a very good price… because they never went to dental school!
Finally, in 1994, the British government said “Enough!” and paid everyone to leave and then demolished the place.
Now it’s a nice park.
And that’s the end of the story of Kowloon Walled City.
What an amazing story , thank you mr V

It was a very interesting artical. Thank you!
You’re welcome!
Jep, really interesting. I think you are satisfied that you chose this place for today. But you must have been in a real slum sometime before. Isn´t it? About the slums of Mumbai and Rio de Janeiro I have heard from my daughter. But I read now that there are still many more them in our diverse world.
So good constrution of story!!
For me It would be culture shock! We dss this topic on chatroom today with Jessica🥰
Wow! What a story, deserves a book!
Thank you for sharing with us your observations and marks and for the interesting video with subtitles in English, Polish, etc..
It is an impressive story. There was a Gipsy slum in my town for a long time. The slum had its own regulation. But the city government destroyed the slum, moving slum inhabitants to the new buildings. There were many problems with moved slum people for years afterwards. They had problems with accepting normal life model.
Thank you Ryan for this interesting documentary. It´s help me to practice power word frightening. What cause can push people live on this place. Fortunately it´s a past. Where are these people today? Hope they live better. Nice time to everybody.
It is a very obvious example of the dynamics of large cities, which have such areas. In a way, all these areas reflect social inequalities and how people find extreme solutions to existence. The question is whether the elegant Park that took the place of the old city really solved the problems of those people?! It’s a general question, although the local context is important on a case-by-case basis.
HI ! Ryan
That area was a shame for the British government .
So,in 1994 it decide to compensate the inhabitants of that unhealthy area and to demolish area, to be build a green area for walking and relaxing.
Thank you Mr. Vig. Incredible place.😳👎😳🙏
Thanks for interesting story!
