Do you need must have good English for work?
Does your English make your boss cry?
Do small children speak better English than you?
And have you been learning English since before the receptionist was born?
Well finally, some good news.
A researcher at Meiji Gakuin University in Tokyo and his colleagues recently made a discovery.
It could change how businessmen and women around the world finally master English.
In fact, it’s going to make meetings, telephone calls, sales… everything in business a whole lot easiers.
THE DISCOVERY
Here’s what the researchers did.
They took a lot of business magazines…
They took a lot of business books…
They took a lot of business newspapers and websites…
(And by “a lot”, I mean the total number of words was 64 million!)
And they dumped all these business words into a blender.
(Or maybe it was a computer…)
And they asked the question:
“What are the words that are used most often?”
The result…
A surprisingly short list.
Just 1,700 words.
But if you know all these words, you understand almost 100% of all business communication.
You can read “The Wall Street Journal” to understand why your stocks bombed, you can call Bill Gates the next time Excel crashes, or you can negotiate with Elon Musk for a cheaper ticket to Mars.
How Is This Possible?
This seems surprising, maybe even impossible, to a lot of people.
Afterall, the Oxford English dictionary has 171,476 words. And the average college-educated native speaker knows about 20,000 words.
But according to this new research, it seems native speakers just don’t use that many words.
We’re more comfortable recycling the same words again and again and again.
2,368 basic words is 92% of English communication. Add another 1,700 business words, and that’ 97% of all business writing, speaking, news… everything!
And that’s good news for anyone who wants to save time and start sounding smarter today.
How To Get Your List
Do you think speaking English would be easier if you had these words?
What about understanding native speakers?
